DAYS OFF.

It’s been ages – years, probably – since I’ve had guilt-free days off. Thanks to my situation post-graduation (yeah, that graduation that I didn’t even go to – so left-wing), my days off have come to be little but an opportunity to job-hunt and better myself. Obviously, I’m human, and sometimes I need days off and holidays to recuperate, so it doesn’t always go that way. If I do ever have a day off on which I laze around or drink booze, I always have tinge in the back of my mind that I should be doing something more productive. In the last couple of weeks, however, with a little bit of work experience and some freelance work on my side (hopefully marking a shift in my luck and some promise for my future) I have felt that guilt lifting, ever so slightly. Not that I’ve had a day off, of course. But today, I do! My first in 20 days. My parents are on their way up, my guilt’s on it’s way down, and we’re going to shop and, naturally, drink booze. For this reason, this is my only fad this week. I literally couldn’t concentrate on one more thing. (Except the dentist. More on that feat another day.) And in celebration of this day off? Ska.

Not entirely sure what’s happened to me this week, besides not going to the gym, getting more job rejections, wishing it would get colder more quickly, worrying about Troy Davis and listening to Ernie K-Doe on repeat. Other than that I’ve bought a lovely new jumper! Hence wishing the temperature would take a tumble. But more on that [beautiful navy fisherman's knit] another day.

As I type this to you, I’m sitting on my boy’s fancy new computer feeling ultra important and as though I should be doing something extremely creative and clever. Alas, I’m looking for fascinating documentaries and idly searching for inspiring/aesthetically pleasing blogs, as always. In fact, this computer feels so fancy – I think it’s all in the sitting-at-the-desk thing, as opposed to my usual lounging on the sofa with a diet coke and my comfy old laptop (I daren’t bring a diet coke near this thing) – that I actually feel a bit like Carrie did when she tried to work in Alexander Petrovsky’s house. Ok, this computer is not that fancy, but he did build it himself, so I feel I should attach some higher importance to it. (I know, I thought only geeks and loners built computers too – apparently we’re wrong about that).

Anyway, I suppose I should make use of my wider blogging space (did you notice? Thanks to the boy for sorting that out for me). What better way than with a wonderful artwork. I haven’t posted one for ages, and what could be better (slash cheesier) than Connie Francis singing those Italian Classics we all know and love. Ha!

Selfridges window display! Aaaaah! It never fails. But this time. This time! Seriously. Ok, firstly:

So, anything remotely philosophical (yeah, I reckon Plato wore stripes) is always going to get me. Anything remotely nostalgic is always going to stop me in my tracks and make me think/feel/long. I just love this sign – don’t you? I love what it says and the fact that it made me stop. Nautical fashion just isn’t going anywhere and I love that Selfridges are paying tribute to its most famous antecedents; I love the thought of stripes as uniform, as play clothes, as a confident fashion statement. And as for Jane Birkin, well….

Erm, have you met my obsession with all things French and sixties? Of course, they’ve just casually pinned up the 1969 Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg album! Good shout, Selfridges. You always know what makes sense. What a fabulously nautical nod to a brilliant album and an iconic piece of artwork. Now, speaking of nautical…

A piece of rope as a necklace. Why didn’t I think of that? They should’ve made a bag out of the fishing nets too (like the ones Susan Kennedy uses to go food shopping in Neighbours, ha!) Missed a trick there, Selfridges. But still, good work – the brown leather belt so delicately tucked in… and don’t even get me started on the beautiful front pleats on the trousers! So effortlessly chic, so perfect for seafaring. And finally, just incase you wanted a closer look…
